Introduction
This web page describes how to use the graph paper function
to perform long addition. Long addition involves using the Carry button
to carry numbers forward.
Long Addition
When you do long addition, it is easiest to use graph paper
to lay out the numbers. Access the graph paper by clicking on graph paper icon:

You typically put in the problem, writing left-to-right and
then you solve the problem writing right-to-left. We have tried to represent
this concept within the control in a hopefully natural way. The usage of the
function keys will be described by an example. Here is the problem you are
going to solve and the initial layout

Initially click on a cell near the top to start entering the
problem. You will see a blue highlight with an arrow indicating the direction
the cursor will move.

Start keying in the numbers, left-to-right, using the
keypad; the cursor will move left automatically.

Now click on the cell below the 3 and one to the left. Enter
a + sign and the second number

Now click on the cell below the 4 and then click a second
time and the arrow will switch direction to indicate the data will go in
right-to-left

Now click on the Underline button.

And the sum will be underlined

Now proceed to add up the numbers starting with the 9 and 4.
Proceed as you would if you were writing it out by hand “nine plus four is thirteen,
three carry the one”. As you say “three carry the one”, press the 3, then press
the Carry button.

You will see this

Now press 1 and the little ‘x’ will be replaced by a little
‘1’.

Now add the next column which is 7 + 0. But you must also
remember to add the 1 carried from the previous action. You say “seven plus zero
plus one is eight”. Keep going until all the numbers are added together

Finally, press the Copy button to copy your answer to
the input box and press the Next button for the next question.
