Introduction
This web page describes how to use the graph paper function
to perform long multiplication. Long multiplication involves using the Carry
button to carry numbers forward. This is a more complex example of using long
addition. Please review the article on long addition, as some general
information is provided there.
Long Multiplication
The problem we are going to solve is shown below

Enter the problem in an identical way to long addition,
except you should put a times sign instead of an addition sign.

Starting with the digit 7, add a zero for the tens unit.

Now say “seven times one is seven”. Enter the number seven.

Now say “seven times four is twenty eight, eight carry the
two”. Enter the numbers in the same way as for addition

Now say “seven times two is fourteen, add the two is
sixteen, six carry the one”. Enter the numbers,

Now say “seven times five is thirty five, add the one is
thirty six”. Enter 3 and 6. No need to use the carry as this is the last digit.

Click on the next row down.

Multiply the top row numbers by the 4, following the same
process as for the seven. Do not add the initial zero for this number of
course! Finally place the cursor at the start and underling the result. For
completeness I have included the add symbol, but you can skip this if you want.

Now add up the two rows, as for long addition.

Finally remember to press the Copy button to copy the
result to the answer box.
